Self-Care Teaches You How to Show Up For Yourself

Reason number 35 why I decided to make self-care a priority this year is…

Self-care teaches you how to show up for yourself.

Recently, I saw a post on the social media page of xoNecole that said “Show up for yourself.”  My immediate response was “Oh.”  My next response was “Yeeeesssss.”  What a simple yet powerful reality check!

It is so easy to show up for everyone and everybody, but when was the last time you showed up for yourself?  I am all for helping others (it is my profession), but what I’ve learned and experienced time and time again is that if I do not first help myself, I am not as helpful to others.

Take a moment to think about that one person in your life who is always ripping and running for others.  Think about that one person who will always answer your call and who will drop everything they are doing to lend a hand to a friend in need.   Think about that person.  Is that person you?  If it is, I’ll ask you this, when was the last time you showed up for yourself?  If that person is not you, I would encourage you to ask that person you had in mind about the last time they showed up for themselves.  Friends encourage friends to participate in self-care.

Now that we are aware of the need to show up for ourselves, I want to now ask what does showing up for yourself even look or feel like?

For me, showing up for myself is obviously self-care. Beyond self-care, showing up for myself looks like waking up each and every day with an attitude of gratitude. It looks like me being present throughout the day.  It looks like me trying the best I can in each and every moment.  It looks and feels like wellness.  It feels like  compassion towards myself.  It feels like self-love.  It feels like hope.  It looks and feels like everything I am and everything I aspire to be.  It looks and feels like my purpose.

As we participate in Self-Care Month, be sure you schedule some time to show up for yourself.

Be well,
