As a licensed therapist, I have experienced the consequences of not making self-care a priority. Personally and professionally I am a giver. As the “go to” person professionally and personally for clients, friends and family, I realized one day that I was slowly not feeling like myself. I was exhausted and going through the motions of life. I was pouring from an empty cup. As I arrived at the dangerous destination called burnout/compassion fatigue that I read about in graduate school, I realized I need to make a change and make a change FAST!
This is how my self-care journey began. I started spending more quality time with myself. I would actually schedule it in my calendar because let’s be honest, if it’s not on my calendar then it’s not real. I worked hard to learn/relearn how to set boundaries with myself and others in order to maintain balance.
Over the years, I have challenged myself to practice some form of self-care on a daily basis. Am I perfect with this goal? Not at all, but self-care is not about perfection; it’s about progress.
Through my continual practice of self-care, I have learned how to extend more grace towards myself. Self-care is about doing your best with what you have at the moment. When I give to myself, I am better equipped to give to others.
