Self-care is Adulting

Reason number 36 why I decided to make self-care a priority this year…

Self-care is adulting.

Responsibility is one of the biggest factors involved in this thing we like to call “adulting.”  Growing up, we are groomed to learn how to make good choices. We are gradually given more and more responsibility as we get older.  It might start with one simple chore and then before we know it we are responsible as children for cleaning the whole house.  Fast forward a few years, we may or may not be deemed responsible enough to drive a motor vehicle.

Common responsibilities that are required of those of us participating in adulting include following the rules and regulations of the law, working to obtain income in order to pay for all of our basic needs (ON TIME) while finding time to enjoy ourselves.  Adulting is a tough job especially when you are adulting responsibly.

There are times when you have to say no to invitations of friends or family due to prior obligations or due to the fact that you want to pay those bills ON TIME without any overdraft fees.

Sometimes we have to choose the “adult” thing to do in order to avoid an adverse consequence.  The same is true for self-care.  We must choose self-care to avoid adverse consequences of not taking care of ourselves.  Even the energizer bunny’s batteries eventually run out.  Why wouldn’t yours?

As we near the end of self-care month, how many times have you made the irresponsible choice of not practicing self-care?

This question is not one to guilt you, but it serves as a way to bring to your awareness that you too are important.  You to have a responsibility to not only your family or your friends or your job, but to YOURSELF.

Self-care is an integral part of adulting.  Make the time.  Be responsible.  Happy adulting.  Practice self-care.

Be well,

Sonya
